Off to the races: An Old Dog learning New Tricks

After spending nearly the last 15 years of my IT career focused on IT Leadership, as I moved up the ladder to IT Director of Infrastructure at Tractor Supply Company, I’m embarking on a new direction that will take me back to the technical depths. While I’m excited to share my shift from people leader to pure technical lead, I recognize that I have a steep learning curve ahead of me. The way the job is done has changed since I last spent the majority of my day in SSH sessions, writing Bash scripts, and extracting gems of data from log files and Nmon data as a Linux and Windows Systems Engineer. There are new ways of working that I’ve discussed and advocated for over the past several years. Now, I have the chance to dive into the trenches and truly learn the tools and methodologies that drive a modern IT Infrastructure Organization to successfully navigate a Hybrid-Cloud world.

So… I’ve decided that I need a place to document and track my learning journey. While I’ve never been one to write in a journal, starting a blog seems like an odd but necessary step. I know I’ll need a place to keep up with the long list of resources I’ll consume as I retrain and retool myself for the challenges that lie ahead.

As I become more proficient with the tools and methods, I also plan to use this site to document the build and deployment patterns that I find most useful, in the hopes that others may benefit or engage in productive debate.

Wish me luck!
